Troling is one of the oldest and most popular techniques. It consists of leaving lures trailing behind his boat in perpetual movement.
What equipment do you need for trolling ?
As mentioned above, the choice of the material will very often depend on the fish you covet. It must be adapted to your goals.
• Echo sounder
It allows to follow the structures of the bottom in order to determine the most suitable posts (generally the falls and wrecks).
• Cane and reel
For a light train, you can start with a rod of 20 lbs and reach 130 lbs for a heavy train. On average, a rod is used in 50 lbs with a rotating drum or fixed drum reel.
• Wires
The wires are made of nylon and preferably of relatively large diameters. The bottom of the lines, for their part, can be nylon, polyamide, steel or fluorocarbon.
• Accessories
The bubble to hold the lure on the surface; The downrigger to reach great depths; The surface dinghy to drive the line out of the wake; The Japanese plank rising to the surface during a catch; The paravane to go down the line and even more accessories are available to facilitate your success !
• Lures
Fish (sardine, mackerel, bonito etc.) - squid - pork rind - crankbaits (rapala type) - undulating and hammered spoons - feather trains - flexible plastic lures etc.
How fast should you be trolling ?
Whatever your embarkation is, the speed of the boat has to be constant, the engine can not be cut. Depending on if the water is calm or agitated, trolling is practiced from 2 to 10 knots.
Sometimes, some fishermen use up to 10 lines at a time to increase their chances. In addition, trolling has the advantage of being able to prospect over long distances: it promises beautiful and many catches !

How far should you troll ?
