The White Bass belongs to the Moronidae family. Its maximum length is 46 cm and its maximum weight is 3.2 kg. Its maximum lifespan is 15 years. Spawning takes place from March to May. The best time to catch it is from mid-April to mid-May.
As with other true basses, the dorsal fin is clearly double, separated into thorny and soft-raked parts. White Bass is a silvery shade ranging from dark grey or black on the back to white on the belly. Several incomplete lines or stripes extend horizontally on either side of the body. Adults look like a young striped bass, and the two are often confused. However, the striped bass has two distinct pieces of teeth on the back of the tongue, and the white wolf has one piece of tooth. The striped bass has two points on each cap, unlike the white bass which has one, and the second spine of the anal fin measures about half of the third spine of the striped bass, while it is about two thirds the length of the third spine in White Bass.
The White Bass lifestyle
The White Bass is carnivorous. Their diet includes cyclopoid copepods, calanoid copepods, daphnia and leptodora.
White Bass are active spawners in early spring. Male schools migrate upstream from spawning areas up to one month before females. There is no nest preparation. Spawning occurs either near the surface or in the middle of the water. Running water with a gravel or rock substrate is preferable. Females rise to the surface and several males gather when the eggs and sperm are released. Large females sometimes lay nearly a million small eggs during the spawning season. Once released, the eggs sink to the bottom and attach to the rocks and hatch in 2-3 days. Fry grow quickly and feed on small invertebrates. White Bass can grow eight or nine inches in the first year. Adults are generally found in schools. Feeding occurs near the surface, where fish, crustaceans and emerging insects are abundant. Gizzard and shad are the preferred foods. White Bass over four years old are rare.
The White Bass habitat
White Bass originates from the west-central Appalachian Mountains, including the Great Lakes, as well as the river systems of the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys.
White bass is found mainly in open water. Reservoir systems have been shown to support higher populations than natural lakes and rivers. This species prefers open water areas with low turbidity and clean, unvegetated substrate. Low abundances of white wolves are directly correlated with increasing amounts of vegetation.
