The Walleye belongs to the Percidae family. They can reach 107 cm in length and reach 11 kg. The average weight is about 5 kg. Walleye can live 10 to 20 years. They spawn in the spring or early summer. It can be fished from May to March.
Walleye are freshwater fish of the Percidae family, a popular and commonly supplied game fish. The body is long and thin, mainly golden and olive colored, with a white belly. The back is crossed with five or more black stripes. They have two dorsal fins - one spiny and one with softened rays. The mouth of the walleye is wide, with sharp teeth, and its low-light vision helps it to find its prey at night.
The Walleye lifestyle
Walleye is strictly carnivorous. Juvenile walleye eat plankton. As they get older, they mainly eat fish such as yellow perch and freshwater barrels. They also eat insects, crayfish, snails and water lilies (a kind of salamander). They even eat small mammals when fish and insects are not available. Feeding takes place at night.
In most of the species' range, male walleye reaches sexual maturity between three and four years. Females normally mature about a year later. Adults migrate to tributary streams in late winter or early spring to lay their eggs on gravel and rocks, although open-water reef or spawning strains are also observed. Some species are known to spawn on vegetation or sand. Spawning takes place at a water temperature of 6 to 10°C. A large female can lay up to 500,000 eggs and parents do not take care of their eggs or fry. The eggs are slightly sticky and fall into spaces between the rocks. The incubation period of embryos depends on the temperature, but generally lasts 12 to 30 days.
The Walleye habitat
Walleyes prefer the deep waters of lakes and rivers, but will settle in shallow crevasses to feed in the early evening and at night.
Walleye originate from Canada, the Great Lakes, the Missouri Basin and the Upper Mississippi Basin. It has been introduced into the western and northeastern United States.
