The Steelhead trout belongs to the Salmonidae family. Steelhead trout is a name given to the anadromous form of red-band trout (O. m. Gairdneri) or coastal rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus. M. irideus). Steelhead trout can weigh up to 26 kg and reach a length of 114 cm. He can live 11 years. It breeds from January to April. It is fished from the end of October to the month of November.
Steelheads trout generally have a more refined shape and a silver or copper color when they reach adulthood, which is why they are called them.
The Steelhead Trout lifestyle
Steelhead trout eat a variety of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and small fish. They generally feed on zooplankton when they are young and begin to include fish eggs, shellfish, crustaceans, small fish and even mice in their diet.
Steelhead trout can be divided into two basic reproductive types based on their sexual maturity during their spawning migration. These two types of reproduction are referred to as "river refining" and "sea refining". Steelhead trout can be grouped into winter or summer runs, depending on when adults return to fresh water to spawn. Steelhead male reaches maturity at two years and the female at three years. Juvenile steelheads can spend up to seven years in fresh water before migrating to brackish waters and then to the ocean where they begin to mature. These fish can then remain at sea for an additional 3 years before returning to fresh water to spawn. Some steelhead populations will return to fresh water after their first season at sea but will not breed. They will then return to the ocean after a winter season in fresh water.
The Steelhead trout habitat
Depending on their phase of the life cycle strategy, Steelhead trout lives in freshwater rivers and streams, estuaries and marine environments. Steelhead occupies freshwater streams or lakes during spawning and then returns to brackish waters to live on the high seas during the adult phase of their life cycle, without spawning. Steelhead spends most of the year in estuaries or in the open sea and only returns to fresh water to spawn.
Steelhead trout originated in North America, west of the Rocky Mountains.
