The Spotted Seatrout belongs to the Scianidae family. Spotted sea trout reach a maximum length of 100 cm and a maximum weight of 7.9 kg. The lifespan of this species is 8 to 10 years. It breeds from March to September. It can be fished all year round.
The spotted seatrout has an elongated, somewhat compressed body with a slightly elevated back. The head is long with a pointed snout and a large oblique mouth. The dorsal fin is continuous or slightly separated. The fins are flake-free, with the exception of 1 to 10 rows of small scales at the base of the dorsal and anal fins. The lateral line extends over the tail, characteristic of all Sciaenidae. The body of the spotted seatrout is silvery with irregular black spots on the upper half, from the dorsal fin to the caudal fin. The dorsal side is dark grey with bluish reflections while the ventral side is silvery to white. The dorsal fin is dark, while the others are yellowish.
The spotted Seatrout lifestyle
The newly hatched seatrout diets consists of plankton and copepods. As the spotted seatrout grows, there is a change in diet for larger items, such as mysides and shrimp. The diet of mature seatrout consists of fish and crustaceans. Prey species include anchovies, silversides, crayfish, mules, gherkins, gherkins, silver trout, gobies, snappers, sheep heads, toads, storks, mojarras and occasional sea trout.
Spawning occurs at night and is indicated by male croaking that occurs one to two hours before sunset. Shallow bays and lagoons, as well as deeper channels and depressions near grassy plains, are used as spawning grounds for spotted sea trout. Spawning involves many jumps and body contact between individuals. Fertility increases with size, with each female producing 15,000 to 1,100,000 eggs per spawning season. Spotted sea trout eggs are spherical and measure about 0.70-0.98 mm in diameter, with one to four droplets of oil.
The Spotted Seatrout habitat
The spotted seatrout is a groundfish found in brackish to marine waters. It has been observed in shallow coastal and estuarine waters on sandy bottoms and meadows to a depth of 10 m.
It is only found in the western Atlantic Ocean. The sea fly is found from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to southern Florida and throughout the Gulf of Mexico.
