The Southern flounder belongs to the Paralichthyidae family. its average size is 30 to 35 cm for an average weight of 5 kg. it can live up to 7 years on average. it reproduces in winter. it can be fished all year round.
All flatfish, which include southern flounder, are laterally compressed and spend most of their lives swimming along their bottoms. In the case of southern plaice, the left side is always the "top" side; in other species, the opposite is true.
The Southern flounder lifestyle
The southern larval and post-larval flounder eat mainly zooplankton. In juveniles, the diet of southern flounder consists of small invertebrates and moves to larger invertebrates and fish as they reach adult size. Southern flounder feed on the ocean floor and water column and are considered close to top predators.
They first spawn at the age of two at a depth of 15 to 30 meters. The eggs are floating. After hatching, the larvae swim in a vertical position and their eyes are located on opposite sides of the head. As the young fish grows, the right eye begins to "move" to the left side of the head. When the body length is about 1.27, the eye migration is complete and the fish returns to its left position for life.
The Southern flounder habitat
The range of the southern plaice overlaps. It's common in Mississippi. Southern plaice occur in North Carolina, the Gulf of Mexico and south to Mexico, except on the two coasts of southern Florida.
Southern plaice occur in a wide range of salinity and water temperature, from shallow water to shallow estuaries to shallow coastal and offshore waters to a depth of 60 meters. Southern flounder generally enter fresh water and have been found in rivers 160 km from the coast. They prefer soft sediment bottoms and are found in estuaries and in the mouths of bays, bayous and channels, often around rocky piers, pillars and pilings.

The Southern Flounder angling
The southern flounder are caught not only using traditional tools and techniques for hanging on the line, but also in concert. Fishermen walk or fish a small boat along the shoreline in very shallow waters and shine a bright light at the bottom to help locate the plaice, which are then thrown with a concert. To succeed, you need relatively clear water and a calm night with little wind to crush the surface. Good vision and concentration are necessary to discern the blurred contour or sight of a camouflaged and buried flounder.
