The Snook fish belongs to the Centropomidae family. Snook can measure between 0.14 and 140 cm long (average 50 cm) and weigh up to 23.3 kg. It can live up to 20 years. They spawn in June and July and from August to October. The fishing season is open in March and April and again from September to November.
The snook fish has a slim body and a distinct lateral line. It has a high divided dorsal fins. The anal spines are relatively short. The snook fish has an inclined forehead with a large mouth and a protruding lower jaw. The adult snook fish can reach more than 120 cm in total length, which is larger than any other species in this family. The color of the common snake is golden yellow with a distinct black lateral line and pale yellow pelvic fins.
The Snook fish lifestyle
Larvae and small snooks eat mainly copepods and microcrustaceans. As they grow older, they eat shrimp, fish, crabs and zooplankton. This change in eating habits occurs at a standard length of about 4.5 cm and continues throughout adult life.
Although the snook fish can live in both freshwater and marine environments, it must spawn in salt water, as sperm can only become active under saline conditions. It is a protantric hermaphrodites, they pass from a man to a woman after maturation. Common Snook gonads contain male and female sex cells. Female gonads mature directly from mature male gonads shortly after spawning ends. This transition takes place between 1 and 7 years. As a result of this process, the majority of small snooks are male and the majority of large individuals are female.
The Snook fish habitat
Fishing for snook is generally limited to estuarine environments. These environments offer shallow waters and an overhanging vegetative shoreline. Juvenile snook fish can survive in waters containing less oxygen than adults. Adult snook fish live in many environments, including mangrove forests, river mouths, beaches, coastal reefs, salt marshes and grassy meadows.
They can be found in New York (USA) and throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Snook fish is also present along the Atlantic coast of Florida, from Cape Canaveral in the south through the Keys and Dry Tortugas, and north of Cedar Key on the Gulf coast.
