The Permit fish belongs to the Carangidae family. Permits reach a maximum length of at least 122 cm and a weight of 36 kg. Permit can be up to 23 years old, but they probably live longer. The spawning season of permit can last all year round. It can be fished in the spring.
The deeply forked tail and elongated front dorsal fin provide the most distinctive features of the permit. Resembling long sickle-like fins, these fins give the name of the fish species, falcatus. However, the permit can also be identified by its highly compressed lateral body, which gives the fish a fine and high appearance. From a lateral point of view, the shape of the permit is rounded in juveniles, but becomes oblong as the fish ages to become an adult. In addition to the long dorsal anterior fin, inserted directly above an elongated anterior anal fin, it also provides 17 to 21 soft dorsal and 16 to 19 soft anal rays. The permits have bright silver sides and blue-green or brown backs. The belly sometimes has occasional yellow or black spots. The fins appear dark grey or black.
The Permit fish lifestyle
The permit’s foods are generally made up of crustaceans and mollusks.
It can spawn all year round. Spawning reaches its peak during these summer months, with extended spawning seasons occurring outside this main period and a decrease in spawning activity during the winter months. The researchers discovered that this permit could appear on natural and artificial reefs or in the coastal waters of the central and lower Florida Keys. Males reach sexual maturity earlier than females, 2.3 years versus 3.1 years, and with respective sizes of 486 mm and 547 mm.
The Permit fish habitat
The permit fish mainly occupy coastal areas such as plains and fine sandy beaches, as well as deeper cuts, channels and holes adjacent to these areas. The substrate of the dishes can vary from sand, mud, marl or herbaria. The Permit fish often allow swimming in water depths of less than 2 feet, although due to the high body depth, large individuals cannot occupy waters as shallow as other flats species such as marine fish. In deeper waters up to 30 m, The permit fish often gather around structures such as reefs, jetties and wrecks, where they frequently occur in large schools.
Permit can be found in the western Atlantic of Massachusetts in southeast Brazil. They are present in all the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico and less frequently in Bermuda. The species has been reported in the eastern Atlantic, but does not occur regularly. The species is most abundant in South Florida.
