The Lake herring belongs to the Salmonidae family. This species sometimes grows up to 40 cm and 2.3 kg, but generally measures between 28 and 38 cm long and 170 to 907 grams. It can live from 6 to 10 years. It breeds from fall to early winter. It is fished in summer.
Also called ciscos, they have a slim and elongated body that reaches an average length of 30 cm. Their body color is silvery with a pink or purple iridescence on the sides, with a blue, green or dark brown to lighter. Their underside is white, while their dorsal and caudal fins may be dark in color.
The Lake Herring lifestyle
The diet is mainly composed of zooplankton larvae and insects, although fish eggs and larvae, including those of their own species, are also documented. It is also known that some small fish, including some species of minnows, are consumed.
As the water temperature decreases in the fall, the lake herring begins to reproduce, with a maximum activity in a temperature of 3°C. In the north where winter arrives earlier, the spawning season can occur prematurely in September. It generally occurs on gravelly or stony substrates, either in shallow water (1 to 3 meters) or in open lakes at a depth of 10 meters. Males arrive at the breeding grounds before females, ready to fertilize a large number of eggs. A single large female can lay more than 20,000 eggs at once. After mating, the parents let the eggs develop on their own. Successfully fertilized eggs develop very slowly during the winter months and take up to three months to hatch before the young move to the lakes.
The Lake Herring habitat
Lake herring has a wide range in north-central North America and extends northward through the Northwest Territories, the Mackenzie River drainage system and Great Bear Lake. It can be found from eastern Quebec to Hudson Bay, throughout the Great Lakes system and in lakes from Quebec to Alberta. This species inhabits the open waters of lakes and moves to schools for protection. They generally live between 13 and 50 meters deep and spend each summer in the bottom waters in the southern part of their range.
