The Humpback Chub belongs to the Cyprinidae family. The maximum size recorded was 38 cm. It has a lifespan of 30 years. It spawns from April to June. It is a protected species, so the angling is prohibited.
The body is almost entirely without a scale, retaining only 80 mid-lateral scales along the lateral line. The scales are deeply embedded on the surface of the fish, especially on the hump. The fish has a very streamlined body, with a thin caudal peduncle and a deeply forked tail. The fins are large and curved, and the origin of the ridge is approximately equal distance from the snout and base of the caudal fin. The mouth is lower and overhung by the muzzle. The pharyngeal arch is small, with a small lower branch. The back is pale olive grey, the sides silvery and the belly white. The dorsal fin generally has nine rays and the anal fin has 10 or more.
The Humpback Chub lifestyle
The Humpback Chub consumes mainly invertebrates and, to a lesser extent, other fish. They can feed at any levels, from the bottom to the surface. The species spawns from April to June, at a water temperature of 19-21°C. Males develop nuptial tubers on the head and even fins. Fish spawn in slower flowing white water, usually on a cobble or rock substrate. Young fish stay close to the coast and in calm areas, preferring slightly more turbid waters.
The Humpback Chub habitat
In general, species persist only in turbulent stretches, bordered by canyons, large rivers in the Colorado Basin. Young people prefer the shallow, low-speed coastal pools located in the Little Colorado River, then gradually move to deeper, faster, larger and older areas. In the Colorado River, in the Grand Canyon, young people of the year meet in backwater and other sites near the coast at low speeds, with similar ontogenetic trends. Colorado adults in the Grand Canyon and Upper Basin are associated with large eddies complexes. The humpback chub seems to be more active at night.
They are found in Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.
