The Crevalle Jack belongs to the Carangidae family. The maximum height is about 115 cm long for a weight of 12 kg, but most adult individuals are about 70 cm long for a weight of about 3 kg. It can live up to 17 years. It breeds from March to September. It can be fished all year round.
The body is elongated and fairly flattened and, like all carangidae, the pectoral fins are shaped like a sickle. Two thorns exist in front of the anal fins. The small scales are silvered laterally, but the dorsal part is blue-green mixed with golden reflections. The anal fin is bright yellow. It has a very specific black spot on the edge of the lid.
The Crevalle Jack Lifestyle
The crevalle jack is a day predator. Adults feed on a variety of fish, shrimp and invertebrates. Juveniles eat mainly small fish and crustaceans.
The Crevalle Jack breeding season is from early March to early September. They breeds off the southeast Atlantic coast and in the Gulf Stream, including associated currents. The Crevalle Jack has been found to spawn in tropical and subtropical environments. The eggs of the Crevalle Jack are between 0.7 and 0.9 mm in diameter and the newly hatched larvae are between 1.6 and 1.8 mm long. Larvae use estuaries as nurseries. In juveniles, small patches on the chest are formed at 25 mm. The pigmentation of the first dorsal fin decreases above 30 mm, the pigment appears on the second dorsal fin at 30 mm and the pelvic fin is unpigmented above 20 mm. The pectoral spot develops at about 120 mm.
The Crevalle Jack Habitat
The Crevalle Jack is found in oceanic, estuarine or riparian environments. This is influenced by the life stage of the fish. They are found mainly near the continental shelf, and are found in waters up to 100 m deep. Fish found in these deep waters are generally larger individuals. Juvenile and larval crevalle lives in upstream currents and are common in shallow brackish waters. Adults, on the other hand, generally occupy upstream currents, reefs, offshore areas or shallow coastal areas.
It can be found in the coastal areas of the western Atlantic Ocean, from Novia Scotia to Uruguay. They are also commonly found in the Gulf of Mexico, particularly along the Texas coast and the west coast of Florida.
