The Bonefish belongs to the Albulidae family. The maximum size of the bonefish is 104 cm and the maximum weight is 10 kg. They can live up to 10 years. It breeds from November to May. It can be fished all year round.
Many fossil remains, several million years old and dating from the dinosaur era, show that the tarpon has the particularity of having changed very little during its long existence. It can be recognized by its streamlined body covered with large silver scales and its mouth with a prominent lower jaw with many small pointed teeth. These characteristics seem to have inspired the different appellations attributed to it according to its geographical distribution: "Silver King" in America or the "Great Scale" in the West Indies.
The Bonefish lifestyle
Bonefish diet is based on benthic worms, crustaceans, fry and mollusks. Clean and healthy ledges, landfills and seagrass beds produce many small prey such as crabs and shrimp.
The Bonefish breeds seasonally; it occurs mainly from November to late May or early June. Bonefish are polygynandrous. They mate randomly, with eggs and sperm dumped in open water among other males and females. During spawning, females discharge their eggs, which are then fertilized outside by males in the immediate area at the time of release. Spawning takes place in deep waters containing a current to move the fertilized eggs. Spawning is generally carried out in schools, resulting in random or group fertilization.
The Bonefish habitat
Sometimes highly migratory, sometimes sedentary, the logic of its movements remains unclear. It is found over a vast distribution area, particularly in the lagoons of West Africa (from Senegal to the mouth of the Congo) and on the Atlantic coast of America (from Massachusetts to Argentina). A coastal pelagic marine fish, it frequents mangroves, estuaries and coastal waters. It is not unlikely to be found in fresh or brackish water, however, and it evolves in either environment with ease thanks to its particularity, that of having a respiratory system that allows it to live in oxygen-poor waters. This so-called euryhalin fish is able to directly inhale atmospheric air to support large variations in salinity.
