The Almaco Jack belongs to the Carangidae family. Its adult size varies from 80 cm to 120 cm. They reproduce in spring. It can be fished all year round.
It has two dorsal fins, the longer of the two is about twice as long as the longer of the dorsal spines. It has a pale blue-green color, with a lavender glow. The Almaco Jack has a short upper jaw, with a yellowish streak from the jaw to the first dorsal fin, but its color becomes less recognizable as the fish ages. Younger almaco jacks usually have six black bars on the sides. The mouth is protractile and allows it to swallow its entire prey.
The Almaco Jack lifestyle
The juvenile is mostly solitary in the reefs. The adult lives in small groups along the walls and hunts schools of herring or mackerel. The jacks proceed by encircling the banks, catching any fugitive. In the Southern Archipelago, it separates humpback whales.
It breeds from spring to summer or autumn, depending on water temperature.
The Almaco Jack habitat
The Almaco Jack is a pelagic species that can be found in small groups on and off the slopes of reefs at depths ranging from 5 to 160 meters. They visit wrecks more often than most other jacks. Almaco jack lives from Kenya to South Africa and has been spotted off the Mariana Islands, Wake Island, Ryukyu Islands, Kermadec Islands and New Caledonia. In the Eastern Pacific, Almaco Jack also can be found from California to Peru and the Galapagos Islands. In the western Atlantic, they live mainly from Cape Cod in northern Argentina, although they are rare in North Carolina and South Carolina. Almaco jacks are not as common in the Eastern Atlantic as elsewhere. The Almaco live near Britain and off Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea. They generally swim at depths ranging from 5 to 35 meters.

The Almaco Jack angling
Fearless and curious, it does not hesitate to approach and observe. It is its skill, speed and power that make it a difficult prey to fish. Fast rushes, powerful head shots, after the attack, the fish systematically look for the bottom and the rock to try to escape you. Reaching 2 meters and 25 kilos, catches of around ten kilos will be the most frequent: for this, methodical fishing and resistant equipment are essential.
Almaco Jack can be fished with encircling or dead nets, with bottom lines or floating lines, trolling (ideally live), jigging or lure throwing.
With its blue-grey color and golden reflections on its back, the Almaco Jack will seduce you, but beware, you will be well advised to use a solid yarn, as it will most certainly give you some trouble. Consuming the flesh of these fish can cause food poisoning called ciguatera.
