The Sterlet fish belongs to the Acipenseridae family. The Sterlet fish measures about 3.50m in length and weighs 300kg. It can live a hundred years. Females lay more than 800,000 eggs on the gravel. Spawning season is around May to June. It can be fished all year round.
The back and sides are grey to beige, the ventral and lateral parts are lighter (almost white). Five longitudinal rows of large bone plates are arranged along the body. The upper lobe of the caudal fin is more developed than the lower lobe. The muzzle is narrow, pointed and raised upwards with four long fringed barbells. The lower lip is notched in the middle. The Sterlet fish has a protractile mouth placed on the underside of the head.
The Sterlet fish lifestyle
The Sterlet fish’ diet is essentially carnivorous. It consists of benthic invertebrates, insects, mollusks or small marine fish. The Sterlet fish with a protractile mouth on the underside of the head feeds on the bottom animals: May flies, mud worms = chironomid larvae, small mollusks and worms. It hardly feeds during the winter.
In the spring, the Sterlet fish swims up rivers to spawn. Males arrive first and spawn in May to June in the riverbed where the current is fast and the bottom covered with gravel. The female lays 110,000 to 800,000 viscous eggs of 1.5 mm in size. Hatching occurs after 4 to 5 days. Sexual maturity is reached in males at the age of 4 or 5 years, and in females between 5 and 9 years.
The Sterlet fish habitat
The Sterlet is a fish that inhabits rivers and their tributaries as well as large lakes.
They spend the winter in bottom depressions where they show little activity and almost no feeding. In the spring, they swim up rivers to spawn. Spawning occurs in the riverbed where the current is fast and the bottom is covered with gravel.
The Sterlet fish can be found in Eurasia: Black and Caspian Sea basins; Arctic drainage of the White, Kara and Azov Seas. This fish was introduced locally into some water bodies.
