The Roach fish belongs to the Cyprinidae Family. The current size is 10 to 30 cm and the weight is 10 to 200 g. Some individuals can reach 50 cm for a weight of 2 kg. Life expectancy is about ten years (maximum 14 years). The breeding of the roach takes place from April to June/July. Fertility is 350000 eggs per kg of weight. It can be fished all year round.
Roach is one of the most common and widespread fish in slow-moving lakes and rivers. It lives in schools of individuals of approximately the same size. These benches can be composed of hundreds of roaches. It is easily identifiable by the diver: the silvery appearance of his body, the eyes and red fins allow him to identify roaches and rotengles. A closer look at the position of the dorsal and ventral fins will then make the difference between the two species. If these two fins are upright, it is the roach.
The Roach fish lifestyle
As an omnivore, roach feeds on insects, crustaceans, mollusks and plants. Adults prefer to feed on plants: wilted plants, debris from outcrops, water lentils, or diatomaceous "grass" that covers reeds, stumps and stones (phytophagous tendency). In winter, it reduces its diet.
Spawning takes place in spring (April to June) when the water reaches 10°C. Males show a rash of small grey-white spawning tubers on their heads and backs. Females too, but in a less developed way. Large males form schools where females enter. Their eggs are fertilized by males following the female. There is a certain frenzy and fish often jump out of the water. Sticky eggs (350,000 eggs/kg of the female) are laid at one time in vegetation or on stones. Pale yellow, they measure between 1.1 and 1.5 mm in diameter. They hatch after 4 to 10 days. Larvae have a yolk vesicle and remain passively attached to the plants or to the bottom for 2 to 5 days. Then they feed on animal plankton near the shore. Sexual maturity is reached after 2-3 years for males and 3-4 years for females.
The Roach fish habitat
Roach is a fish that lives in schools in the stagnant waters of lakes, ponds, and reservoirs or in the slow-moving waters of rivers and canals. Its rusticity allows it to withstand environmental pollution, brackish water and environmental degradation.
It is widespread in Central and Western Europe from the Pyrenees to the Urals. It is absent from Spain, Portugal, Western Scandinavia, Italy, Albania and Greece.

The Roach fish angling
It is a fish that can be caught all year round thanks, in particular, to the technique of blow fishing. The priming can be done with flour, bread crumbs. The mud-worm is a prime bait but it also bites many plant bait in summer and animal bait in the cold season. For large roaches, the hempseed works well but requires a few days of priming beforehand. The fisherman will make sure to use a thin line, more efficient to catch these fish.
