The Haddock fish belongs to the Gadidae family. The average size of haddock is 30 to 50 cm. It can measure up to 1.20 m and weigh up to 14 Kg and can live until the age of 20 years. It reproduces in spring. The female can respond to up to 3,000,000 eggs. This fish can be caught all year round outside of spawning periods.
Like all coastal fish of which it is a part, haddock has three dorsal fins and two anal fins. Its body is more or less dark, crossed by a black lateral line and characterized by its silvery reflections. Its belly has a lighter shade on its back, it can be olive green and sometimes black. Two distinctive features for this fish: the black spot at the base of its pectoral fin and a small barbel on its lower jaw.
The Haddock fish lifestyle
The Haddock fish is a benthic fish (living on the bottom) that can be found on muddy or sandy muddy bottoms. It’s quite sedentary. There is very little migration in this sedentary species other than seasonal migrations. Haddock gather on the banks during the summer, but in winter they move to deeper waters to avoid low temperatures.
It feeds on everything it finds on the bottom: worms, bivalves, gastropods, crustaceans, small echinoderms (brittle stars).
Males and females are sexually mature when they are 2 to 3 years old. Haddock spawns mainly in early spring at depths of 30 to 200 m. It is the size of the females that determines their fertility, with the largest females being able to release more than 3,000,000 eggs during the same spawning season.
The Haddock fish habitat
Fish of this species are found in the North Atlantic, the English Channel and the North Sea. They are benthic fish that can live between 10 and 450 m deep, but they are found mainly between 80 and 200 m, where the water temperature is 4 to 10° C, on muddy or sandy muddy bottoms or on flat areas covered with gravel. At night, these fish rise to the surface, about ten meters away.

The Haddock fish angling
Usually, this fish is caught by line and net. It can also be fished with Danish seines, trawls, longlines and even pelagic longlines.
In principle, for more responsible fishing, haddock should not be fished below 27 - 30 cm. Generally, Haddock reach sexual maturity between 2 and 5 years of age, measuring between 40 and 60 cm. Although this fish is available all year round, it is prohibited to fish it between March and June, the spawning season.
