The chub fish belongs to the family of Cyprinidae. The common catch size of the chub fish varies from 15 to 30 cm, but it can reach 80 cm for a weight of 8 kg. The longevity is estimated at about ten years. The reproduction of the chub takes place between April and June. The female lays 20,000 to 100,000 eggs. It can be fished from July to Mars.
The body is long and cylindrical with a terminal mouth, pointing upwards, with large lips. The big head has a flat forehead. The large, black-edged scales give it a reticulated appearance. The anal fin has a convex rear edge. The back and upper part of the head are greyish-green to brown in color; the flanks have silvery or even golden highlights; the belly is whitish. The fins are grey except for the bellies and the pale red anal fin.
The chub fish lifestyle
The chub is an omnivorous animal that consumes insects, plants, fruits, annelids, mollusks, frogs, crayfish and small fish such as dowels, minnows and other small Cyprinids.
The Chub fish reproduction occurs between April and June at a temperature of 15°C or higher in areas rich in vegetation. Sexual maturity is reached at the age of 2 years for males and 3 years for females. Spawners migrate from breeding areas to breeding habitats (stony bottoms). The female lays 4 times per season, each time she lays 20,000 to 100,000 oocytes that adhere to plants and gravel and release a larva after a few days.
The chub fish habitat
The chub is a running water fish but it is also present in lakes. They generally live near the surface in summer and descend to the bottom in winter. Often in large schools when young, it becomes solitary in adulthood. In the Baltic Sea (Finnish coast), it occasionally enters brackish water, not very sensitive to water temperature, and can be found everywhere, from fresh high-altitude waters to warmer estuarine waters.
It shows good resistance to pollution.
The chub is found throughout Europe except in southern Italy, northern Scandinavia, Scotland and Ireland.

The chub fish angling
Because it is omnivorous and active all year round, this fish can be caught in different ways:
In summer, since it is often close to the surface, "with a fly" or "by surprise" with a grasshopper, a small cricket, a cherry or an elderberry seed. At this time (especially after spawning), it is also common to catch it by "spoon" or "live" fishing.
In the cold season, with cheese or "with blood". The chub fishing is open from July to February.
