Striped bass (morone saxatilis) is a fish of the Moronidae family found along the Atlantic coast of North America.
Introduction
Striped bass lives in mid-tempered areas between 7 and 18 degrees Celsius. This species do not swim in warmer waters. As a result, when the weather is too hot they tend to move deeper in the sea, where the temperature is cooler. Thus it can swim between 30 and 60 cm depth but it can go as deep as 12 meters if needed.
Maximum length of the striped bass is 1,8 meters and it can weigh up to 20 kg. It has a streamlined silvery body, marked with long dark stripes running from behind the gills to the base of the tail. It can be found in rivers, bays, inlets, estuaries as well as creeks.
Where can you fish for striped bass ?
Striped bass is rarely found more than several miles from the shoreline. It is more numerous in rivers despite it is smaller in such areas. However it can be caught in several water areas as it tend to live near the surface.
If you want to maximize your chances to have a great catch, it could be interesting fishing Baja spots (San Quintin, Cedros Island and farther south).

When to fish for striped bass ?
During the first two years of life they normally do not migrate. After this period they tend to move up and down the coasts and into river systems to spawn, then back out to sea throughout the year.
As striped bass fishing is regulated in several States it is strongly advised to consider what is allowed in the area you are targeting for catching this fish, especially for commercial fishery.
How to fish for striped bass ?
There are several ways of catching striped bass: from the surf, harpoon fishing, from the jetty, bridge fishing or boat fishing. Moreover, fishing for striped bass from a boat requires good knowledge of fishing.
The best bait for stripers fishing is a live anchovy or sardines and live mackerels. If the fishes are hungry you will not have to wait too long for a bite. Once caught, set the hook immediately. Fishing for this species can be a great challenge: many fishermen even use fluorocarbon leaders so that the fish cannot see the fishing line in the water.
